ABOUT ABOUT

Adult Workshops is a curated series of workshops for adults, for which the Museum of Life and Science pairs up with our favorite Triangle-area experts. Dive in deep and explore the science behind some of your favorite things, and come away with tips from the pros for ways to build your skill on your own. Enroll in individual workshops or sign up for the full series. **Participants must be 21+.

In our first series, explore what goes into brewing beer and making bread, with the help of brewers from Raleigh Brewing and bakers from Ninth Street Bakery. Details:

Beer & Bread 101: How It’s Made Friday Jan 19 6:30-8:00pm @ Museum of Life and Science

The living thing that is responsible for both beer and bread, and is often under-appreciated--yeast! Join brewers and bakers from Raleigh Brewing and Ninth Street Bakery as they show us how these microbes contribute to their products, and how they work with them in the brewery and the bakery. Workshop includes tastings.

Beer & Bread 201: Brewing Saturday, January 27th 12:00-3:00pm @ Raleigh Brewing Company

Take a field trip to Raleigh Brewing Company and meet their brewers behind the scenes. Get a tour of their brewing operation and a guided tasting of their beers. Participants will get hands-on with brewing ingredients, and finish with an in-depth lesson on how to make a small batch of beer. Workshop includes a Raleigh Brewing pint glass, and a coupon for discounted brewing supplies from Atlantic Brew Supply, their in-brewery homebrew supply store.

Beer & Bread 301: Beginner Sourdough Saturday, February 3 5:00-7:00pm @ Ninth Street Bakery

Designed for those looking to take their bread to the next level, curious about the process, or just interested in trying something new, this workshop will cover the basics of building, maintaining, and using a live yeast culture (a preferment usually called levain or sourdough). You will learn how to create and feed a starter, and work through the basic steps to bake pain au levain, a simple, naturally leavened bread that you can use as a template for other breads at home. We’ll explore some of the science behind the process, but the focus of this workshop is on using that knowledge to create tasty bread from simple ingredients. Go home with a loaf and the wisdom to craft more on your own!
