ABOUT ABOUT

Party for the Planet Service Activity
Saturday, April 27
2-3:30pm

Help us celebrate Earth Day and get dirty at our Party for the Planet service activity! We’re looking for volunteers to help spread beneficial pollinator plants throughout the Durham community. All ages are welcome, but space is limited. We have two activities that can accommodate roughly 50 volunteers:

Pollinator Planting
Join us in creating new pollinator habitats near Ellerbe Creek Trail. This urban watershed trail is an integral part of the Durham landscape and is close to our hearts at the Museum. Volunteers will help install a native plant pollinator garden along the path as well as additional plantings along Murray Avenue.

Make Seed Bombs
Seed bombing is a planting method used to easily spread beneficial and beautifying plant seeds in gardens, vacant lots, sidewalks, ditches and more. A seed bomb is made by mixing clay, compost, and seeds with your hands so be prepared to get dirty!

Volunteers will meet at the Museum’s picnic dome on the Southside of Murray Avenue at 2pm and should plan for 1-2 hours of work. Water will be provided and all participants will receive a free, reusable Museum water bottle.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I expect?
Expect to get your hands dirty! You provide the labor and we’ll provide the rest.  Museum staff will direct the planting and seed bomb making and provide all tools and access to water. Depending on the number of volunteers, the activity should take roughly an hour.

How are the activities assigned?
Volunteers will be directed to one of the activities as they arrive at the dome. Some of the planting is adjacent to the road and less suitable for families with small children. Planting may involve kneeling and digging, and could require some physical exertion.

We will try to accommodate each volunteer’s interests, but not all volunteers will be able to plant. Seed bomb making is great for families with kids or volunteers who have less time to help.

Is there a cost associated with this event?
This event is free to the public, but participants must register so we can plan accordingly. Museum admission is not required to volunteer as this event occurs on the Southside of campus.

Does this include visiting the Museum?
Museum admission is not included in this activity—if you want to participate in other Party for the Planet activities or visit the Museum, you must pay to enter  or use your Museum membership.

What should I wear?
Please wear closed-toe, sturdy shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty.

What if it rains?
In the case of inclement weather, the rain date for this activity is Saturday, May 4.
